This thought process is shown in the quote, “If good, why do I yield to that suggestion whose horrid image doth unfix my hair and make my seated heart knock at my ribs, against the use of nature? Present fears are less than horrible imaginings: My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function is smother'd in surmise, and nothing is but what is not. He figured that if he killed Duncan he would have a chance at being king, and he acted upon that thought. Order custom essay Macbeth: A Tragic Hero He killed his own flesh and blood in order to get the opportunity to gain power. His first one was to kill Duncan, who was not only the King whom he had loyally served for a long time, but also his own cousin. Early in the play Macbeth was told that he would become King of Scotland, and that really put the gears in motion for the terrible decisions he would make throughout the play. This is shown when he killed the King in his quest for power, when he killed his friend Banquo, and when he killed the wife and child of MacDuff. Macbeth showed that he had a fatal flaw, which was that his ambition was what mainly factored his decisions. Also he went through the death of his friends at his own hand and the death of his wife to achieve what he wanted to, and was willing to suffer for it. He was doomed to make the serious judgment error that was killing Duncan, and he was condemned to do this because the witches prophesized it, his wife wanted him to, and he was unnaturally guided by a dagger to kill Duncan. Macbeth’s flaw of his extreme ambition is demonstrated by how he kills Duncan, how he kills Banquo, and how he kills MacDuff’s family. Therefore Macbeth is a tragic hero in the play Macbeth. There is much debate to whether Macbeth is a villain or hero, but it truly is clear that Macbeth is a tragic hero based on that he has the fatal flaw of having too much ambition, he was doomed to make a serious error in judgment which was killing Duncan, and that he suffered greatly in order to accomplish what he believed was right. This is an example of a tragedy in which Macbeth went through because it is at the end of his life and he had just lost his wife and kingdom. An example of a tragedy is “I will not yield, to kiss Malcolm’s feet, and to be baited with the rabble’s curse.”. Macbeth also loses his wife at the end of the play which causes the reader to feel pity for Macbeth. Another point in the play where the reader feels pity for Macbeth is when he sees Banquo’s ghost and the reader can see that he is starting to go insane. Although Macbeth is not always good the audience feels bad for him at points such as when his wife emasculates him and pushes him to kill Duncan. Macbeth elicits pity into the audience or reader. An example of his tragic flaw is that in the book it says “Stars hide your fires Let not light see my black and deep desires” which is when he is thinking about killing Duncan. For example, Macbeth was thane of two places and was very highly respected but still needed to go and murder someone to achieve greater success. Macbeth’s tragic flaw is that he has a need for power that ends up never being enough. Another reason is that Macbeth for the most part of his life is loyal to Duncan and served his country. In the play Macbeth is a brave warrior for his country. The Witches are also at fault because they told Macbeth that he would become king and Macbeth interpreted that as that he had to kill Duncan for the crown. Another person(s) who led to the downfall of Macbeth are the three Witches. The reason Lady Macbeth is also at fault for Macbeth’s downfall is that she pushed him and was arguably the largest motivating factor for Macbeth to kill King Duncan and take his crown which ultimately led to his downfall. One of the characters who was also at fault for the downfall for Macbeth is Lady Macbeth. Macbeth shares the responsibility for his downfall with a couple of characters from this play. A quote from the book is “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman”. In the beginning of the play it says how Macbeth is a great warrior or soldier and earns him fame which adds to the characteristic of him being a tragic hero. Later in the play he ends up being King of Scotland which is a noble position. One example of him being highly renown is that at the beginning of the play he is Thane of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is a noble and highly renown which is one of the five characteristics of being a tragic hero. In the play Macbeth the main character Macbeth is a tragic hero despite the large number of people who would argue that he is not.
